The religious hierarchy in the medieval times

Medieval age’s religious hierarchy became so influential. Jesus Christ had been considered as the God and the hierarchy or religion which followed the preaching of Christ began from the Church. Moreover, in medieval times the Church gained more importance. The Church and the clergy men were considered more important. The king had the power to appoint members of the Church starting form clergy to, Priests, and Bishops. Priests did not have enough influence over the religious matters and Bishops and Archbishops from rich families had powerful role to play in the religious hierarchy of the medieval times.

The priests
During the middle ages Priests need to provide protection and care for the religious community. They were supposed to conduct prayers in the Parishes. As far as social circle is concerned, Priests were very much respected and considered as the prime person to solemnize marriages and baptisms. To make arrangements for religious events and cremation formalities have also been conducted by the Priests.
In majority of the places by Christianity the religious hierarchy began with Bishop, who will be followed by Arch Bishop, then Arch Deacon, Abbot, Prior, Dean and finally Monks. In other words the religious hierarchy began with the higher level to lower level. They are
  • King- the ruling power
  • Nobles- who executed the Kings instructions
  • Clergy and peasants- though they are lower in class they had a supreme influence over the above members
Among them the Bishops maintained a powerful position whose duty was to manipulate the orders given by the king. In European countries the role played by the Bishops was considered more significant because, every King had one Bishop to work under him and give him suggestions over the Church affairs. A Bishop also had many challenging roles to play in the religious hierarchy of the medieval times such as
  • pay attention to the predicaments of clergymen and priests
  • impose taxes on peasants
  • solving marital issues
  • implement rules to be followed in the Church
  • manage the arms and forces to assist the King during war times
  • monitor the whole business of the church
  • Administer the nuns and monks during their execution of Church related duties.
Roman Catholic Church was considered as the most influential religious place which also unified all the other communities of Christianity. The power of the Church can also be identified with its growing economy. With the influence of Roman Catholic rule the Church hierarchy began from
  • Pope – Though he comes first in the lead role of religious hierarchy, he was advised by Cardinals
  • Cardinals- They will be in Charge of the Archbishops
  • Arch Bishop- Controlled the bishops
  • Bishops-who looked after the religious matters of the town
  • Priest-performing mass
  • Monk- lived in the monasteries and rules by abbots
  • Nun- Looked after the educational services.

Sunni Religious Hierarchy

Sunni community is the first largest Muslim sub sect in the world. Sunni religious hierarchy has their own religious beliefs; they are in many ways similar as well as different from that of Shiites. The general theological beliefs which both the Sunnis and Shiites share are
  • Allah- the supreme power equal to God and the general belief that Prophet Muhammad as the direct messenger of Allah, the Muslim God
  • Prophet- was considered a direct messenger of Allah .They obey the customs and revelations forwarded by the Prophet
  • Quran-The revelations of the Prophet are from Quran and the Prophet should abide the rules of the Quran
  • Basic Fundamental Concept- Belief in fundamental concepts like obliging goodness, justice and obedience to Allah.
However, in general all the Muslims have to abide by the Prophet’s revelations like
  • Belief in Allah , not in God
  • Salat- Five times to pray per day
  • Zatak-helping the needy
  • Swam- Strict fasting from morning to evening during the whole month of Ramadan
  • Hajj- a compulsory pilgrimage to Mecca in a lifetime.
Based on the above five general obligations, Muslim community is classified. Sunni Muslims are the ones who believe in the first four revelations. Apart from that they also believed in Ali since he followed the Prophet. According to them an Imam is a person who should abide the communal harmony within the political frame and also possess all sorts of merits a leader should have.

Throughout the Muslim history one can identify clearly that the whole Sunni community obliges to the same beliefs and never shown any sort of distrust towards their norms and conditions. They strongly had faith in the status that the position of Prophet can be attained by personality who is qualified to the norms mentioned in Quran. Hence, their religious hierarchy does not have any sub divisions or branches like Shiites. They are more down to earth and allow even lay persons to take the opportunity of preaching them.

The Sunni religious hierarchy had four main schools which interpreted the legal decisions for the Muslims. They are
  • Hanafi- Founded by Abu Hanifa in 767 AD and practiced in Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, and Bngaladesh.
  • Maliki- Founded by Malik Ibn Anas in 795 Ad and practiced in places like North Africa, Mauritanis , Kuwait and Bahrain
  • Shafi- Founded by Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi in 819 AD widespread in places like Egypt, Somalia, Yemen, Malaysia, Indonesia and Ethiopia.
  • Hanbali- founded by Ahmad Hanbal in 855 AD and widespread in places like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Parts of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Wahhabism is a remarkable movement in Islamic Puritanism of the present century. Abd al Wahhab who insisted on strict and orthodox practice of Islam as instructed in Quran. During 18th century Muhammad ibn Saud made an alliance with Abd al-Wahhab and succeeded in uniting the minority tribes of Arabian Peninsula, This resulted in a close relationship between Saudi region and Wahhabi beliefs.

Shiite Religious Hierarchy

Islam is one of the major religions in the globe. As every religion has its own subsections, the religion of Islam is not an exceptional from forming its sub sects. Sunnis and Shiites are the major sub divisions in Islamic religion, among them Sunnis occupy more than 80% of the Islamic population, and Shiites are not more than 20%. Shiite is the second major division of Islam religion. The origin of began from the influence of a political movement where Prophet Muhammad’s son-in-law Ali gained support to become the next leader of the Islamic country. It was due to Muhammad’s suspected tendency towards Ali. Those who followed Ali were called as Shi at Ali, which means supporters of Ali, this later came to be known as Shiites. However, there existed many differences between the religious beliefs of Sunnis and Shiites.

Ali, the Prime head of Shiite’s Hierarchy
Ali, then was considered as Imam, which indicates the leadership of the community.

Imam
As far as religious beliefs of the Shiites are concerned, an Imam is one who has blood relations to the Prophet Muhammad. After Ali, his sons took hold of the leadership.

Descendants in the Shiites’ religious hierarchy
In the Shiite religious Hierarchy the Imams remained the supreme authorities who in turn took care of the political as well as spiritual concerns of Islam. Ali’s second son Hussein was sacrificed by Sunni followers in 680 and the tenth day of Muharram during every year is marked as a remembrance of Hussein.

Some of the various forms of Shiism or Shiite’s religion which continued with Shiite’s religious hierarchy are

Twelver Shiism- Those who follow this train believed the successive imams from Ali to have been divinely appointed by God. This trait is commonly found in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Bahrain. They also believed that the twelfth Imam will come back and lead the community.

Sevener or Ismaili Sevener- Those who believed Ali as the first and foremost righteous Imam, and did not had faith on his successors. This community then accepted only five of the seven descendents as Imams.

Zaydis are the group of Shiites who accepted only first five descendents of Ali as Imams. Though they are not majority community, there still remain people following Zaydis in Yemen.

Alawites and Druzes are other forms of Shiites and followed very secret religious practices. They believed in Islam as symbolic representation of faith and not as celebrations.

Druze is another form of Shiite religious community who believed all the customs of the mainstream Shiites.
Historical revelations say that those who followed Ali and believed him to the direct descendent of the Prophet. While majority of the Muslims believe in the existence of Allah as the prime God, who implements the revelations through Prophet. At present the major terrorist groups like Al Qaida, is believed to be a descendent of Shiites.

Mayans religious hierarchy

Mayan is the religious group who believed in Sun, Rain and Corn as their Gods. It is a religious feature that paid more importance to astronomy and astrology. They perform human sacrifice and had a strong belief in building temples in the shape of Pyramids. The origin of Mayans Religious Hierarchy began in South America during the first millennium B.C, where a tribal community called Mayan lived. Latter day Saint Movement

As man started to learn new things, he formalized his own community into groups with the aim of uniting people of same thoughts. Religion is one of the important characteristics that determine the human faith and beliefs. Every religion has their expressions in their own way. Groups and subgroups of every religion are classified based on the type of faith, customs and traditions. Mormon religious hierarchy is one of the branches in Christianity. It is a blend of religion and culture followed by people who belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. It was during April 1830 in Western New York, when the Latter day Saint Movement and Mormonism came into existence.

Church is monitored by General Authorities who are also the higher level members. The Mormons Church is controlled by a President. Next in turn are the counselors who assist the President. The team of President and the Counselors is called the First Presidency. The Mormons believe in the modern thoughts and hence consider the President as the representative who can speak directly with GOD. These authorities are the deciding power for anything concerning the Church; they also have the full influence to finalize on the rules and regulations of the Church.

Twelve Apostles
The second authority team in Mormon religious hierarchy is the Twelve Apostles. They bear the responsibility to monitor certain programs like missionary program or maintenance of Church. The Twelve Apostles are considered as particular bystanders of Jesus Chris.

The first and second Quorum
They follow the Quorum of Apostles and consist of First and Second Quorum of the Seventy. These members of the first and second Quorum work under the instructions of the Apostles and look after the Church’s local lay leaders.

Whereas, the first and second Quorum are overlooked by the Presidency containing a group of seven men who in turn work full time for the Church related activities. The Quorum, in turn representing as Church people take care of the regions like Utah, West part of Africa which comes under the power regime of the Church. The members of the First Presidency, Quorum of Twelve Apostles, and First and Second Quorum all together work full time for the Church and The next level of Stake Presidency will be selected by them.

The Stake Presidency
The Stake Presidency is the next hierarchical level of the Mormon religion it consists of the President, First Counselor and the Second Counselor. They monitor the local unit of Church which comprises about 600 people called Wards. Wards are then presided over by the Bishops who in turn take care of the welfare activities like collection and distribution of funds to the poor people.

Women Mormons

Religious Hierarchy in Medieval Times

The Religious Hierarchy of the Medieval Times refers to the religious folklore which has been changed with the change in time and also improvement in generations. The Religious Hierarchy in Medieval Times is also known as the Medieval Church Hierarchy. The hierarchy of the church was further divided into two hierarchies which the people used to follow at that time.  The further division is referred to as the monastic and the secular.

The monastic hierarchy for men started the following ways

·         Oblates and some other children who were attending the monastic schools at a particular point of time.
·         Above these are the novices and lay brothers.
·          After this comes the collection of Obedientaries and under this category lies the monks, Cellarer, Hospitaller, Sacrist and Infirmerer.

All these were under the direct authority of the Pope, who is considered to be leader of the entire Catholic Church.

Another is the secular hierarchy, which began with the minor order people, known as clerks

·         The category of clerks included the Door Keepers, Lectors, Acolytes and the men studying at the schools which belonged to the church schools such as universities.
·         Above the clerks, were the major orders of the clergy which included Priests, Bishops and Deacons.
·         And finally above the Bishops were the Archbishops and then the Pope.

This is how the Religious Hierarchy in Medieval Times used to function.

Also, during the Religious Hierarchy in Medieval Times, it was important to go on a religious pilgrimage. The hierarchy included a pilgrimage which means a trip to a shrine in order to worship the god. During the medieval times, there were many different pilgrimage centres and some of these pilgrimage centres includes Santiago de Compostela, Canterbury, Jerusalem and Rome. The medieval church also played a major role in the medieval times religion and has some of the below mentioned important people engaged in the church:

·         The Pope – the pope is considered to be the leader of the Catholic Church and during the medieval times, Bishop was known as the pope who was the successor of the Saint Peter.

·         Archbishops – These are considered to be important for the working of many churches but were heads of the only local ones

·         The Patriarch – These are also of equal importance, and are considered as heads for many local churches

·         Cardinals – The cardinals, who are also known as Catholicism, were the appointed people by the pope. The Cardinals are also known as the Prince of the Catholic Church which was of prime importance during the Religious Hierarchy in Medieval Times.

The Medieval churches had dominated life of many people, be it the village peasants or the town’s people everyone believed in god and paid a visit to the church on a regular basis which helped in satisfying their inner soul.
